I have had a number of days to observe the general population of this WorldCon wandering through the hotels and the convention center, and, while admitting the possibility of some transcendent achievement I simply didn't see, feel that I can point out two significant achievements in fannish fashion. The best fashion understatement in the hat category is the Moshe Feder baseball cap embroidered with the rubric "Fandom Prime." It represents a significant moment in the evolution of fannish consciousness and deserves applause. The polar opposite, a remarkable piece of headgear that turns all heads, is the horned Viking hat with propeller, surpassingly silly up close or from a distance. I have not yet gotten close enough to read the badge of the inventor, and so cannot give personal credit to the wearer. But your con should not be complete without spotting this expression of fannish retro-avant garde.
We continue the search for excellence.
