The Second Occasional LoneStarCon Science Fiction Convention and Chili Cook-off, Variously known as the 55th World Science Fiction Convention and LoneStarCon 2, the 1997 Worldcon, To be held from August 28th through September 1st, in the year 1997, in San Antonio, Texas.
LoneStarCon 2, the 1997 Worldcon: Speculative Fiction Writers' Workshop
oneStarCon2 will run a Writers' Workshop for fledgling and experienced
writers. Agents and editors planning to critique at LSC2's Writers' Workshop include: Joshua Bilmes, Randy A. Dannenfelser, Lucienne Diver, Claire Eddy, Scott Edelman, Ashley Grayson, Kathy Ice, Irene W. Kraas, Edward E. Kramer, Denise Lee, Jody Lynn Nye, and Sheila Williams. Writers planning to critique at LSC2's Writers' Workshop include: Rob Chilson, Lynn Flewelling, K. W. Jeter, Jean Lorrah, Mary Rosenblum, Susan Shwartz, Allen Steele, S. M. Stirling, Sage Walker, Janny Wurts. Shirley Crossland will coordinate it. She has participated in the Slug Tribe critique group and the Austin Writers' League for many years.
Because so many wonderful pros agreed to critique at the Writers' Workshop, we are extending the postmark deadline to June 30.
This is not a competition. The workshop will have small groups to provide
mutual help for experienced and beginning writers, based on the principle
that good critiquing skills make good writing skills. Participants will
work in a quiet, secluded room to elaborate on the story structure,
logistics, and style of the entrants' submissions. The workshop provides
members the opportunity to have their manuscript evaluated by selling
authors who enjoy helping them grow as artists. (We cannot guarantee which
professional will read any particular manuscript.) The critical nature of
this workshop requires maturity from the participants.
The workshop has the following requirements:
- Stories must be either science fiction, fantasy, horror, or have a
fantastic element of some kind. They may be short stories, long stories,
novels, poetry, or screenplays.
- Manuscripts must be postmarked by June 30, 1997. Send one copy. (Ask
about software compatibility before sending diskettes.)
- Manuscripts may have up to 7,500 words (about 30 pages) and be in a
standard manuscript format. Don't forget the page numbers! Novels and
stories over 7,500 words must include a synopsis and a sample of the story.
The synopsis counts as part of the 7,500 words.
- Multiple submissions are accepted. If more than one manuscript is sent, a
separate fee is required for each. (However, if we are talking about two
3,000 word stories one fee is enough.) Send a separate check for each story
in case we cannot schedule the second story. Second submissions are
scheduled on a first-come-first-served basis. Please specify the priority
for your manuscripts.
- Please write your LSC2 membership number on the first page of your
manuscript. If you do not yet have a membership, your manuscript must be
accompanied by payment for a membership. You must have an attending
membership to attend your workshop section. Checks should be made out to
"LoneStarCon2" and labeled "for membership." You can call the LSC2 office
at (512) 472-4290 to put it on your plastic on Wednesday, Thursday, or
Sunday evenings from about 6:00 to 9:00 CST.
- There is a workshop fee to cover the costs of copying and postage. The
fee is the same for a collaboration as for a single author. Manuscripts
must accompanied by a check or money order for the workshop fee:
| U.S. members | $25.00 |
| Canadian and Mexican members | $30.00 |
| Other members | $35.00 |
The workshop fee should be made out to "LoneStarCon 2" and labeled "for
Writers' Workshop."
- Send your manuscripts and checks to LoneStarCon 2, P.O. Box 27277, Austin,
TX 78755-2277, Attention: Writers' Workshop.
Send questions about the workshop to Shirley Crossland, Workshop Coordinator, by phone at (512) 453-8944, e-mail to saxland@io.com or snail mail to the LSC2 P.O. Box above.
